With the economy as it is now, I can't believe that they charge these outragous fees. Monte Carlo is $20 a night extra - for WHAT! I don't plan on sitting in my room using the Internet or drinking their water. Shouldn't people be encouraged to go to the casino and gamble...that way they still get their lousy $20 only we get something out of it!

Resort fees are done for two reasons. First, when comparing rates on travel sites, the pre-fee rate shows up, drawing you to that hotel. When you book the room, and just before entering your credit card info, they "mention" the fee, and it's charged at check-in. That way it appears not to be part of the rate, when it of course is.

Secondly, it isn't taxed like a room rate. That's why the add-on. It's still taxed as a profit from sale, but not part of the tax that's charged a room. Another way to squeeze $$ from a guest. The funniest part: some hotels charge it as a "convenience fee." Yep, nothing more convenient than paying a $20 "fee" on a $50 room, very handy.

This is geting out of hand. The Four Seasons wants to charge 250-400 a night and then an additional $20.00. Between the airlines and resorts picking our pockets it is almost not even worth it to travel any more. I urge everyone to go to non-fee resorts and hotels.

Good to know... A way to fight resort fees is to go to your bank after paying it and dispute the charge... even if the bank decides it is a valid charge (they won't), it still costs the resort $20 that they have to pay to the bank!
but make sure you let the resort know why you are disputing it.

Hidden fees are getting out of control. I stayed at the Palms, and when I asked the front desk to mail some letters for me (10 things, already stamped), they sent me to the business center, where I was told it would cost me five dollars per envelope. No way was I paying them 50 bucks! I caught the bus down the road about a mile to the post office and will never stay there again.

Ballys still doesn't charge a resort fee, I'm going there in March. They have pretty large rooms for the price. I stayed there a couple years ago and liked it.

The resort fee at the Excalibur is now $14 per night. Although I agree with others about user pay fees I booked this hotel because of the rate of $28 per night and 2 free buffets (breakfast or lunch) up to $20 value. So, my logic was that I was getting back a couple of the days resort fees in the free food. As for the hotel itself if there was no resort fee I would have considered a better class of room and they would have still made the same amount of money or more.
